Peanut Butter Cup Challenge

For years, the human race has had great debates on subjects that have changed the world. Is the world round, why are we here, is there a God? Many of these debates have gone on since time began and may never be resolved. It is up to us as a society to keep questioning our world, to explore what could and what might be. We here at Candy Critic also have questions, but we don't just sit around trying to think about these problems, we take action.

One of the most perplexing questions ever proposed is this:

What's the best part of the Reese's Peanut Butter Cup: the chocolate or the peanut butter?

Well we've decided to call in two experts, one a chocolate fanatic, the other a peanut butter connoisseur, and let them try the "More Chocolate", and "More Peanut Butter" cups and speak their mind. Someone had to do this.

Chocolate Fanatic's More Chocolate Review:

I love chocolate. I'm not the biggest fan in the world, but considering that one of my favorite types of candies is chocolate, I figure that says a whole lot. So here goes with what could be the best peanut butter cup ever.... There is most definitely more chocolate in this cup, although it is all around the edges. I thought it might be a little more dispersed. I don't find that I'm getting as much of the peanut butter pasties as I normally get when hit with too much peanut butter. This isn't bad. The chocolate is pretty good and the peanut butter just adds a hint of taste instead of taking over the whole treat. I have to say I'm impressed, although I think I'd have to have a regular peanut butter cup to really compare how much more chocolate there is.

Peanut Butter Connoisseur's More Peanut Butter Review:

I'm not too sure what to expect from this peanut butter cup. I mean, I love peanut butter, and when I grab a big spoonful of peanut butter to eat with a square of chocolate, I make sure that the peanut butter is far more plentiful than the chocolate. Reese's Peanut Butter Cups, however, are already perfectly proportioned in my opinion. Oh well, here goes.... It's kind of neat - there's no chocolate on top - it's like a peanut butter tart! I have to say, I expected the sweetness of the peanut butter to be overwhelming, but to my pleasant surprise, it's not! It kind of reminds me of the peanut butter ball cookies I used to make as a kid. Yummy, with a little nostaligic bonus. And I'm not bothered by the new proportions at all. I might even like this better than regular Peanut Butter Cups.

Peanut Butter Connoisseur's More Chocolate Review:

After the surprise of the cup with the extra peanut butter, I'm kind of worried that the almost too sweet taste of regular Peanut Butter Cups comes from the chocolate. Having said that, I do love chocolate almost as much as peanut butter, so good things could happen here. The cup is very solid and feels like a nice chunk of snack. Biting into it, there's a nice texture, but I have to say that the chocolate really does overpower the peanut butter. I can't really taste the peanut butter at all. And the chocolate is so very sweet. Too sweet for my taste. The overall impression is very sugary and very dry, with a not altogether pleasant aftertaste. I think in future if I want to go heavy on chocolate, I'll get a nice plain dark chocolate bar and enjoy that.

Chocolate Fanatic's More Peanut Butter Review:

Wow, this thing is so full of peanut butter that it doesn't have a top. It's overflowing with peanut butter. This is a crazy, crazy world we live in. Ok, I think I have to say that I'm a little disappointed, and this might taint the whole project. I think the top part of the peanut butter cup might be peanut butter-flavoured chocolate. I didn't mind the extra chocolate cup, but I think this one with the extra peanut butter, particularly with the strange top, is way too much. It's so dry and it's making me really thirsty, my mouth is searching for something to work with the peanut butter flavour and it's just not finding it. I like the combination of these two flavours, and this really doesn't have it.

Peanut Butter Connoisseur's final thought:

Before this little experiment, I really thought Reese had gotten the chocolate/peanut butter balance just right in their regular cups. I always thought they were a little sweet, but not too bad. I thought the over-sweetness was because they added too much sugar to the peanut butter (I'm sure they do add some), but now I think it's that they add too much to the chocolate. It's been about five minutes since I ate the "more chocolate" one, and I still have a bit of nasty aftertaste, and I'm a little nauseous. The "more peanut butter" ones have less grams of carbohydrates, if you look at these things. In my opinion, they taste much better, too. The peanut butter still lets you taste that nice complement of chocolate, but the inverse just doesn't happen with the chocolate ones. The chocolate (and sugar) just takes over.

Chocolate Fanatic's final thought:

What can I say about these two treats other than this: the chocolate ones, although they had more chocolate, weren't very different from the regular peanut butter cups. The peanut butter enhanced cups were just pretty awfull. It's not that I don't like peanut butter, it's just that I didn't like what appeared to be peanut butter-flavoured chocolate. Even so, I like a little more balance in my treats. Sure, the chocolate added a little more chocolate, but it wasn't ridiculous. All in all, if this is a direction that their going, I say lean towards more chocolate. However, if this is just a publicity stunt, then mission accomplished.
