Sweet Potato Candy
?
You want old style Japanese candy? Well this is
the way to go. Sure Pocky is classic but it's fairly new, Milky's
have been around for a while but they don't even come close to treats
like this. This is one of those treats that come from an old candy
shop in a small town where the people there have been making it
for generations. The recipe has been the same and as with this there
is one ingredient that defies logic to modern North American candy
fanatics.
I'm pretty sure that most of you enjoy sweet potatoes,
or at the very least some of you. I'm not a huge fan but wouldn't
call a Thanks Giving dinner complete without some. So I guess the
question is does it work as a candy and I'd have to say that it
does. Sweet potato is really an untapped treat in the candy market.
It works well sweetened and it even had a really nice natural colour.
These are a perfect example of all of that.
The fact that these are just simply cooked (I'm
assuming baked) sweet potatoes with a little sugar shows how well
these tubers work as a sweet treat. The only thing that throws me
off even a little about these would be the texture. They basically
feel like you're eating potato slices and that's not really something
I'm used to when in a candy eating mode.
If you can get by the texture and the fact that
it's a sweet potato you've got a great treat on your hands.
